Using a Mini Disk

1) What is a Mini Disk? (If you already know, skip to step 2).

A Mini Disk is used for recording audio, and was meant as a replacement for cassette tapes when it was created. Mini Disks are similar in quality to CD’s, but normally they are used primarily for storing audio tracks. One advantage they have over CD’s is that you can easily change the position of tracks, erase tracks, or add new tracks to a Mini Disk. With the advent of CD-RW’s CD’s have this functionality as well, but they are still not as convenient as CDs for audio storage.

2) So, how do I make it work?
Mini Disks are easy to use if you have any past experience with audio hardware, CD’s, or cassettes. To get started using a Mini Disk simply place it in your playing device. (use of various devices which are used to play mini disks will not be covered here). After waiting a moment for it to load up, you’ll be able to do a variety of things with your Mini Disk. The uses of, “Play”, “Forward”, “reverse”, and “record” are apparent (although you should remember these commands may be abbreviated on the buttons of your Mini Disk player). “Forward” or “fwd”, skips through tracks forwards, and “reverse” or “rev”, skips through tracks backwards, Pretty easy right? They will also be used in some cases to pick different options when you are moving tracks, erasing tracks, etc. “Play” of course, lets you play a track, and “record” or “rec” lets you record over a track, or record an entirely new track.

1a) Edit and Select.
The next thing you need to know about using a Mini Disk is how to use “edit” and “select”. Pressing edit repeatedly brings up different things you can do to the tracks on your mini disk. Pressing select after bringing up one of these actions chooses to perform it. For example, you can press edit until erase shows up, and hit select to delete the track so you can record a new one. In the same way, you can also move tracks in the same way.

3) Final Pointers.
Using a Mini Disk is quite simple. It’s really not much different from using CD’s or cassettes, it’s just a different way of ding the same thing, which is, in some ways, more convenient than other methods.
