MiniDiscs were introduced in 1992, as a possible replacement for cassette tapes. At the time, compact discs were growing rapidly in use, but had not become the market dominating force they would eventually grow into.
A MiniDisc looks a bit like a smaller version of the compact disc, but is housed in a semi-translucent case that fits into a specialized player. The case, or more commonly referred to as a cartridge, has a sliding door that exposes a portion of the disc in order to read it, much like the older 3.5-inch floppy discs.
However, unlike most compact disks, MiniDiscs always support read-write capability, but never have found the significant market share of CD media. As recordable CDs and other forms of flash memory have become available, those types of portable storage have pushed out usage of MiniDiscs significantly. However, there were quite a few music enthusiasts who loved MiniDiscs because of their compact design. The compression of audio was not common at the time the MiniDisc was introduced, but the anti-skip technology in MiniDiscs was far superior to the original compact discs. Portable music was still evolving, and the Walkman had only been in existence for approximately a decade. The concept of smaller, cheaper devices that held even more music was just being brought out to the public. The general population had not yet fully embraced the idea of portable music, but were warming up to it.
Even though Sony, the creator of the MiniDisc Recorder, were aggressive in their attempts to license the technology, the format has never gained traction as much as other types of storage. Despite superior technology, ambitious licensing deals and a definite market need, the MiniDisc Recorder never was never able to take advantage of the key benefits. Even though the format is one that is designed for portability, it has had a tough time remaining visiible in a world of iPods and other digital players.
Using a Minidisc is a great way to expand your collection of music. They offer many features that regular discs do not. There are many different places to purchase Mini Disk Recorders, but your best bet is to start your search online. The prices are usually 50-80 percent cheaper when you buy them online.
